Yes—Multi-Certification Is Possible and Increasingly Common
A single activewear garment can carry GRS, OEKO-TEX®, and GOTS certifications simultaneously, provided the materials, production processes, and chain-of-custody documentation satisfy each standard independently. This is common for premium sportswear that combines recycled synthetics with organic cotton blends.
How Each Certification Overlaps
| Certification | Primary Focus | Material Scope | Key Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| GRS (Global Recycled Standard) | Recycled content + environmental & social criteria | Synthetic fibers (recycled polyester, nylon) | Minimum 20% recycled content, chain of custody, wastewater treatment |
| OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 | Product safety (harmful substances) | All textile components | Independent lab testing, annual retesting, no restricted chemicals |
| GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) | Organic fiber content + processing | Natural fibers (organic cotton, wool) | Minimum 70% organic fibers, strict chemical and processing rules |
Practical Example: Blended Activewear
Recycled Polyester Component
The synthetic portion can be GRS-certified to confirm recycled content. The same garment is also tested for harmful substances under OEKO-TEX®.
Organic Cotton Component
If the garment contains organic cotton, the organic fiber input must be GOTS-certified, with separate TC certificates tracking the organic content through production.
Important: Each certification has its own audit cycle and TC (Transaction Certificate) trail. The factory must maintain separate records for each standard, and auditors will verify each certification independently during on-site inspections.
Cost and Practical Considerations
- Audit burden: Multiple certifications mean multiple annual audits—manageable but requires organized documentation.
- Premium positioning: Triple-certified products command higher trust and justify premium pricing in the activewear market.
- Retail access: Multi-certified products face fewer barriers when entering premium retail channels and international markets.
